Hiring Process
Prior to submitting an application, applicants must complete CJBAT testing at the Institute of Public Safety Criminal Justice Institute located at Broward Community College Central Campus in Davie, Florida. You can also access information on the schools website @ www.broward.edu/locations/central/instpubsafe.jsp. Your scores will determine your placement on the Civil Service Register. Prior to submitting their application, all applicants must complete a physical agility and swim test.
The next step in the process is the BPAD. This involves interactive role playing which is video taped for scoring at a later time by qualified evaluators. This test is scheduled by HR at the time the applicant drops his/her completed application.
Upon completion of BPAD, applicants are given a personal history questionnaire (PHQ). Upon receipt of the PHQ by the Personnel Unit located at the Police Department, and after review, you are then scheduled for a CVSA (voice stress analyzer). This test takes approximately one and one half hours and is conducted by qualified examiners, who will determine if further testing is required.
The next step is the background phase; this is where you and your information are personally and physically checked by trained background investigators. Once the background is completed, the file is presented to the personnel command staff and evaluated. If found in order, you will then be scheduled for a psychological exam followed by a drug screening, physical examination, and hair sample testing.
Upon successful completion of the testing, the applicant is scheduled for the final step which is an interview with the Chief of Police.
Training
The police academy session is a comprehensive course lasting approximately 760 hours; the community service aide academy is a 206 hour course. Upon successful completion and graduation from the police academy the candidate will then be required to pass the State certification exam. This usually takes place the week after graduation. After graduation the new officers will report for their FTO Program (Field Training) where they will be assigned to an experienced officer trained as a Field Training Officer for the next fours months. This is a process that is designed to gradually build new officer’s skills to the point that they can perform their job functions without assistance. As a community service aide you will also enter into a Field training program lasting approximately two months and upon successful completion be assigned a shift position.
