The Miramar Police Department believes the Community Policing philosophy to be an integral part of modern policing. The department has embraced the community policing philosophy through the use of the Team Policing concept. In the Team Policing Concept, Road Patrol officers are assigned to certain areas (or zones) within the city on a regular basis. Having officers routinely assigned to the same geographic area allows them to build strong partnerships with the residents and business owners of their area. In addition to their regular patrol duties officers respond to crime trends determined through crime analysis and the requests of residents. Team meetings are held so that all the officers assigned to the particular zone may share information, thereby, empowering them to be more effective in proactively reducing crime.

Each zone and team has an assigned Community Oriented Policing Team Coordinator or CPTC. The CPTC works full time toward implementing the Community Oriented Policing philosophy and the associated Team Policing Concept. The CTPC’s strive to develop and maintain working relationships with the citizens of Miramar. They assist citizens through crime prevention and problem solving. CPTC’s attend many homeowners’ association meetings in order to build strong relationships with residents.

CPTC’s also work closely with the business owners of the city to ensure the safety, security, and compliance of their respective businesses . They participate in monthly Information Based Policing (IBP) meetings with the department’s administration. In IBP meetings, the CPTC’s identify crime trends in their individual assigned areas and network with specialized units to plan and implement proactive strategies to deter crime and halt crime trends.

CPTC’s conduct bicycle patrols within their assigned areas. The objective of using CPTC’s on department bicycles is to aid in the delivery of police services in certain geographic and high crime areas. These areas are identified by the department through the crime analysis and directed patrol activities

Due to recent events in other communities, the citizens of Miramar have become acutely aware of the issue of sexual offenders. The Miramar Police Department works diligently to monitor and ensure compliance from sexual offenders who reside within the city’s boundaries. The CPTC’s take many steps to ensure our community is safe from sexual offenders and predators. Some of the steps taken by the CPTC’s are:

  • They verify the address of any sexual predator/offender.
  • They deliver copies of the Sexual Predator/Sexual Offender Flyers to all team members.
  • They distribute copies of the Sexual Predator/Sexual Offender Flyer to all schools and childcare facilities within a one-mile radius of the sexual predator/offender's residence.
  • They check the residence of any sexual predator on a weekly basis and report their findings.
  • They check the residence of any sexual offender on a monthly basis and report their findings.
