The School Resource Officer (SRO) program provides for a safe and secure school environment while delivering a variety of benefits. Some of those include providing guidance and mentoring to faculty, parents and others persons associated with school safety operations. The School Resource Officers teach an in-house developed curriculum called SOAR (Students Obtaining Achievment & Responsibility) in elementary schools. The curriculum includes bullying, bicycle safety, crimes that occur in school, peer pressure, gang awareness, drug awareness, In addition to SOAR, the School Resource Officers also teach: the “Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program”, Bicycle Safety, and “Stranger Danger” programs, The department’s commitment to the youth of the community is clearly demonstrated by providing a School Resource Officer in each and every public school within the City.
The SRO’s are a part of our Youth Services Division which includes the Police Explorer Program and the Police Athletic League. These programs provide after school recreation such as kickball, flag football and soccer.
