The City of Miramar has established various Youth to Work programs that respond to fulfilling these opportunities.

The Youth Empowerment & Apprenticeship Renaissance (Y.E.A.R.) program
The program was established by the City Public Works and Utilities department to make a positive impact on the lives of at-risk youth and young adults residing in the Miramar community.
It is a 24-month on-the-job training of young adults involved in the Y.E.A.R. program is coupled with classroom training and subsequent completion certification at the successful conclusion of the program.
At the completion of this highly specialized program, each candidate will be empowered with information to take a state exam and become a Certified Water/Waste Water Plant Operator or a Certified Fleet Mechanic.
*A position in the City is not guaranteed after training.
- The pay is $12.50/hour
- A high school diploma or GED is required
- Candidates must be between the ages of 18-24
- Must be able to work the required 20 hours per week (varying times between 7am – 3pm, Monday thru Thursday)
- Candidates MUST reside in the City of Miramar.
- Must have the ability to read, write, and perform mathematical functions at an average or above-average level
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check – misdemeanors are ok – felonies are NOT
- Must be able to pass a drug test
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
- Khaki pants (provided by the Apprentice)
- Plain White shirt (Provided by the Apprentice)
- Black belt (Provided by the Apprentice)
- Steel-toed boots and other safety materials (Provided by the City of Miramar)
WHAT IS POLICE EXPLORING?
Police Exploring is a Learning for Life organization of the Boy Scouts of America. Open to young men and women, its purpose is to build character, citizen training and fitness to the youth of America. Another aspect to Police Exploring is to educate and involve youth in police operations. The education aspect provides youth with the knowledge of the law enforcement function in their community, regardless of their career choice. Involvement in the Police Exploring program establishes an awareness of the complexities of police service.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE AN EXPLORER?
- 14 to 21 years of age (However you must join by the age of 18)
- Be of good moral character
- Not have a criminal record
- Maintain “C” average or better while in school
WHAT DO MIRAMAR POLICE EXPLORERS DO?
Police Explorers are involved in training sessions on a weekly basis which familiarizes the members with all aspects of law enforcement; including patrol procedures, traffic stops, arrest procedures, traffic and criminal law, criminal investigations, traffic crash investigations and firearms safety. Training is reinforced during annual local and state competitions, attended by the Miramar Police Explorers.
The city of Miramar and community organizations call upon the Police Explorers to assist with traffic direction and parking control at events. Police Explorers are not used in assignments requiring police authority but are used to assist the community and police department under the direction and supervision of police department employees. The program brings the explorer into direct contact with members of the Police Department through details, meetings and the ride along program.
In recent years, the Miramar Police Department has hired a number of individuals as police officers who received their first exposure to law enforcement through an explorer program.

Fire Academy Program
The City of Miramar’s Fire Department established an Agreement between the City of Miramar, Florida and The School Board of Broward County, Florida to develop a training program that exposes youth to the Firefighter trade. This agreement provides that the City of Miramar will administer Emergency Medical Responder/Firefighter 1 clinical experiences at Everglades High School to 10th-12th grade students, enrolled in the “Introduction to Firefighting program”. On-site clinical experiences are necessary to meet Florida Department of Education mandatory student performance standards. This agreement also addresses the requirements of regulatory agencies for students to qualify for certification/licensure examinations upon program completion that will enable them to pursue this career field.
Outside of the confines of Miramar Fire-Rescue Agreement with the School Board a Cadet program is also administered by the department to teach teenagers about the Fire profession and provide them with mentors and volunteer opportunities. The academy accommodates up to 40 students. Deputy Chief Robert Palmer, is the executive adviser of the Miramar Fire Cadet program.
