JULY 2019 - INSIDE MIRAMAR

Hello Friends: In celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month in June, I hosted The Caribbean Village Festival and sponsored a FREE Screening of the highly praised film, SPRINTER, Executive Produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith!

Caribbean Village Festival was a day filled with extravagant experiences indulging in foods from all around the Caribbean. Musical acts included Jo Mersa Marley, Alison Hinds and Shenseea. This event supported the Galleon Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarship assistance to financially disadvantaged youth in our school system.

Sprinter the Film began with a Red-Carpet Reception in the Miramar Cultural Center Banquet Hall with light bites and one complimentary drink ticket for Beer or Wine. Guests were able to take pictures on the red carpet and hear Director, Storm Saulter and Producer, Robert A. Maylor, speak about the film.

As the new school year approached us, I hosted an exciting Back to School Bonanza on Saturday, July 20, 2019, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Lakeshore Park located at 8501 S. Sherman Circle.  Statistically, it is known that students who are properly prepared for school from the start of the school year, have the most learning gains compared to those students that are unprepared.

Jamaican Independence 57 Street Festival was held on Sunday, August 4, 2019, from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Beauty and Progress Park located at 64th Ave and Miramar Parkway. As a proud Jamaican, I was honored to present Jamaican Independence Day Street Festival to my Miramar community, my fellow Jamaicans and those who want to learn more about the Jamaican culture. This event signified our rich heritage and reminded us of our dynamic cultural upbringing.

Finally, I am delighted to have hosted City of Miramar’s Annual Career & Education Fair at Miramar Cultural Center Arts Park on August 7th, 2019. We sponsored this event to bring together South Florida companies and job seekers. Employers who participated found it to be beneficial in assisting with their recruiting needs. We are grateful for our Co-sponsor WSVN-TV and our partners Mission United and CareerSource Broward.

With the budget season upon us, I have proposed several upgrades to our local parks that include a skate park at Miramar Regional Park, and additional picnic pavilion and splash pad as well as parking and drainage improvements at Monarch Lakes park, a new dock at Trilogy Park and a picnic pavilion at Shirley Branca Park. I have also proposed lighting improvements to several historic neighborhoods and road resurfacing to parts of Monarch Lakes Blvd among other projects throughout the city. There will be no tax or fire fee increases in this budget year (2019-2020).

As a former educator, I lift my hat off to all the teachers, staff and school administrators as they begin the new school year. I wish for our students and parents a productive and safe school experience.

APRIL 2019 - INSIDE MIRAMAR

Hello Friends! It is a pleasure to be able to connect with you through this medium and provide updates from my office on a regular basis.

I am pleased to have been able to pass legislation during my first Commission meeting (3/20/19) that provides funding for the implementation of body-cameras for Miramar PD, which has been long overdue. This will ensure transparency and accountability between the Police Department, the residents and the business community it has been tasked to serve and protect. The use of Body-cameras will also benefit officers and the City, as it will guard against frivolous law suits and ensure that both sides of a story are told.

On May 2nd we celebrated Haitian-American Heritage month with a Haitian Cultural Celebration right here in the City of Miramar in conjunction with Community Access Center of Miramar, a non- profit organization. We are very much aware of how the various cultures that are represented here in this great City, contribute to the fabric that makes Miramar one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.

May 5th marked another Cinco De Mayo, which recognizes the defeat of the French by Mexico back on May 5th, 1862. Though not such a big celebration in Mexico, it’s great to use this time to recognize Mexican culture and its colorful heritage.
With the end of the school year and summer break fast approaching we took the time to recognize our hardworking teachers during Teacher Appreciation week at Miramar High. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work that all our teachers, administration and staff do all year to ensure the well-being of their students; our children!

We had the great privilege of hosting the Jamaica National Women’s Team, the Reggae Girlz from May 20 - 24 with a series of Send-Off Celebration fundraising events and activities in support of their qualification to the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup in France, June 2019. The celebration kicked off with an Airport Welcome at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, A Multi-Cultural Sports Summit at the Miramar Cultural Center, and a Send-off Celebration Fun-Day with exhibition matches at Ansin Sports Complex. With the Miramar community having such deep roots in Jamaica and the Caribbean overall, it was a natural connection to host the Reggae Girlz. We were honored to be a part of such a great experience.

On Memorial Day, I joined Miramar United Methodist Church for their annual Memorial Day Picnic where there was food, games, music and fellowship... not to mention jelly coconuts!

This June is recognized as Caribbean-American Heritage Month and the City of Miramar will host a number events to showcase Caribbean-American Heritage. These events include a local Caribbean Concert, June 8th at Shirley Branca Park, the Caribbean Village Festival, June 23rd at Miramar Regional Park and the Red Carpet Showing of the film “Sprinter”, a Jamaican drama, executive produced by Will & Jada Smith and directed by Storm Saulter, on June 28th.

Please feel free to contact me on any matter at (954) 602 3155.

Till we connect again…Your humble servant leader,
Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis

WELCOME MESSAGE | MARCH 2019 - INSIDE MIRAMAR

“I am very pleased that the residents of Miramar chose to allow me to serve once again as their Commissioner! I am ready to work with residents and businesses to take the City to the next level of greatness!”

Alexandra Davis, was born in England and raised in Jamaica, where she attended Mico Practicing All Age School, Wolmer’s Girls’ High School and the University of the West Indies (UWI) obtaining her BSc. Degree in zoology and chemistry at their Mona campus.

She has spent most of her life in public service having worked for the Ministry of Agriculture in Kingston, Jamaica, The Capital Taxes office in London, England and Miami- Dade County Government in Florida.

In keeping with her heritage, she created a non-profit organization called Caribefest, Inc. in 2003 to foster diversity, tolerance and unity in the Miramar community, whose Caribbean population was growing exponentially. The efforts of this organization created a Caribbean cultural festival in the City of Miramar called ‘Caribefest’ where the various cultures of the Caribbean converged with the sights, sounds and tastes of the islands.

Over the years, she has served on various Miramar boards including the Planning and Zoning Board, the Community Services Board and the Education Board. In 2010, she ran for the office of Miramar City Commission, following her passion of public service and from a field of six other qualified candidates she was victorious and was sworn in as a City Commissioner.

She became the Vice Mayor in 2013 and worked on numerous initiatives whilst in office such as creating a Youth Apprenticeship program, proposing the building of the community band-shell as well as the police substation in the eastern/historic section of Miramar, ensuring all schools had school resource officers to include public charter schools and legislating that seniors who qualified no longer paid City taxes.

As a certified teacher she was compelled to form a non-profit 501 (c) (3) in 2015 called the Caribbean American Teachers Association of Florida (CATAF) whose motto is “Inspiring Students and Empowering Teachers” and remains committed to her community.

Alexandra has received many accolades and awards such as ICABA’s one of South Florida’s 100 most accomplished Caribbean Americans; Legacy Magazine’s one of the 50 most powerful and influential business leaders in South Florida; Jamaica Consul General Jamaica 50 Luminous Award; Legacy Magazine’s one of South Florida’s top educators
